| HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO WEAR SUNSCREEN? If you don't know by now then you haven't been paying attention. Here are the latest reviews. Q. Who needs to use sunscreen? A. In a word: everyone! Substantially more than 1 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year.1 Many studies have found an association between sunburns and enhanced risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.2 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Academy of Dermatology recognize six skin categories:3,4 Skin Type Sun History I Always burns easily, never tans, extremely sun-sensitive skin II Usually burns easily, tans minimally, very sun-sensitive skin III Sometimes burns, tans gradually to light brown, sun-sensitive skin IV Burns minimally, always tans to moderate brown, minimally sun-sensitive skin V Rarely burns, tans well, sun-insensitive skin VI Never burns, deeply pigmented, sun-insensitive skin *Dermatologists recommend choosing broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreens with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Don't reserve the use of sunscreen only for sunny days. Even on a cloudy day, up to 80 percent of the sun's ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds.
